Let us start with the truth. Guns don’t kill people, People kill people. Guns don’t get smoked up and go on a shooting rampage at a school. Guns don’t make a fake call to 911 so when the police show up they can kill a few. Idiotic and misinformed people use guns to do these things just like they use cars, knives, and all manner of other objects.
At the time of this writing there have been 11 police officers shot in the last week nationwide. Here in the Dallas, Texas area a fifteen year old was jailed just the other day for carrying a gun into a high school. There is a problem but not with the tool.
Bear with me a minute.
I was born in 1963. I was being held by my mother while she was standing on the parade route the day John Kennedy was killed. The reason we were there is my father was one of the sheriff’s deputies that was securing the route even though we were about a mile away from Dealey Plaza.
The important part here is my father was a sheriff’s deputy. Later he worked as a Dallas Police officer for 27 years. Dallas Security Force for 5 years and ended his time in law enforcement with the Dallas City Marshal’s Office. I was raised around firearms.
I don’t own a firearm currently but I have owned many over the years. I spent my childhood years with easy access to handguns, shotguns and long guns. I even had access to a few fully automatic weapons. The Police departments didn’t use them in those days but Dad had a few.
The point here is that I was exposed to firearms. I was taught to respect them. I was taught by my father, The city of Wilmer Texas, and the firearm instructor at a company I worked for among others how to safely handle and use firearms. I had my own 12 gauge shotgun when I was 15 years old and so did many of my friends. Only two had a mishap involving a firearm. One was a suicide and the other was an accidental discharge. I also had one friend stabbed to death at a North Mesquite High school graduation. That’s why I am more pro ban knives than ban guns.
I will say I am adamantly against any law that bans firearms period. Not only do we need them to protect us from those that may seek to use them against us. We also need them to allow us to protect our Country if needed and God forbid against our government if needed. I hope I never see that happen.
I will say in my opinion that most of the current laws may need a little tweaking. Take the case of John Hinckley, Jr. I used to buy my uniforms from Rocky’s Police Supplies in Dallas. Rocky and I were talking one day and he told me he was the guy that sold Hinckley the bullets that were used against Ronald Reagan. He told me all about how Hinckley purchased a handgun in California, boarded a plane and flew to Dallas. In Dallas he purchased the bullets at Rocky’s which was right off one of the highways here. Boarded another plane and flew to Washington, D.C., where he waited outside the Hilton for Reagan. He should not have been able to do that.
I hope this has given you some food for thought. I am sure there will be somebody out there that wants all guns banned because they don’t want to be shot. Don’t do stupid shit and you won’t get shot.
Until then, take an active role in your children’s lives. Teach them to respect firearms the same way they respect the dangers of cars, knives and working around industrial equipment. You might talk to them about the dangers of drugs and alcohol while you’re at it.
Consider this from CNBC before you go:
That said, the gun industry’s traditional definition of an “assault rifle” is a weapon the military generally uses and has “select fire capabilities,” or the capability to switch between semi-automatic or a fully automatic mode. However, the civilian AR-15s do not have the select fire capabilities, only semi-automatic settings, so the firearms industry insists they are not an actual assault rifle or assault weapon.
