    • Sunspots
    • Solar Cycle runs about 11 years
    • more sunspots at the peak of the cycle
    • The sun is more active when the solar cycle is up
    • more radiation to creates charged particles in the ionosphere
    • denser ionosphere means more refraction

    • Higher ionization helps radio waves propagate more efficiently
    • MUF Maximum Usable Frequency
    • Solar Flares and Coronal Holes are bad
    • Protons are charge killers
    • Easy on the Jargon with the new guys
    • Geomagnetic Storm bad too!
      • It can even charge the D Layer and disrupt Lower HF Frequencies
    • New Hams are getting frustrated

    • Make sure your station is ready for when the cycle comes back
    • We are currently at Solar minimum
    • Next Sunspot peak will max around 2023 -2026
    • Usable propagation before them

Richard KB5JBV has been an Amateur radio operator since 1988. He has held positions with the America Radio Relay League including but not limited to Assistant Section Manager, Official Observer, Official Relay Station, Official Emergency Station, ARES Emergency Coordinator for Resonant Frequency: The Amateur Radio Podcast was created to help get information on amateur radio out to the new ham and the ham that wants to find out more about different aspects of the hobby they are thinking about getting into. He held positions with the America Radio Relay League including but not limited to Assistant Section Manager, Official Observer, Official Relay Station, Official Emergency Station, ARES Emergency Coordinator for Kaufman County Texas, Volunteer Examiner and Technical Specialist in the North Texas section.

Richard has also served as RACES assistant radio officer for the city of Mesquite, Tx. and among numerous other duties Including club president for the HAM Association of Mesquite Texas.
